Writing can often be a cathartic process that helps with clarity, staying focused and managing distractions. Being in the self employment world especially, putting pen to on paper can help keep stay on track and maintain sanity through the ups and downs.
Adding a journal or blog to your business also helps detail your story and allows the public to see the human aspect of what you are doing, giving others an opportunity to identify with it. The more people can see the personal side of what you do, what you’re passionate about and your journey along the way, the easier it will be to build loyalty, return business and ultimately longevity.
Think of your business like a sporting team and your customers are your dedicated supporters. Tell your story and connect with others to build a community around what means the most to you.
With that being said, writing can be a daunting thing to undertake and it does take a degree of discipline to maintain and ensure that you’re adding to it as you go. The best thing to do is smart small, write short pieces, thoughts here and there, questions for your customers and any comments that will encourage engagement with the general public.
It doesn’t have to be a professional writing piece, it can be simple, rough, and even a little disjointed at times. The trick is to just get started with it and you’ll find that over time you will find your voice and the community will rally behind you.
