It could be argued by some that we live in an entitled society where a victim mentality runs through many of us. While I don’t think it’s completely weighted on that side, we do function in a high paced, instantaneous, premium serviced world.
We want something and often we demand it.
Flipping the perspective, to get what we want there is often a common sense approach that is not often commonly practised. It’s called, giving.
Giving can come in a whole range of different ways. It can be the obvious tangible gift, item, money or it could be emotional. Whatever it may be, the more you give the more you ultimately get.
Of course it should not simply be a black and white transaction, but to have a giving and supportive attitude you get instant gratification of helping others and you gain new experiences. It can also position yourself to be held in high regard and considered not only when opportunities arise in the future but when you may need to lean others for support yourself.
Remember episode 6 of the Self Starter podcast with Karin of L’escargot Ivre Photography & Graphic Design? Karin took advantage of her local roots in the area and made it a focus to reconnect and support others that were nearby. By supporting the community, the community has supported her and provided her with business.
Think about what you are selling and what you are passionate about. What can you do with these things and give to others? It could be holding some free workshops, volunteering, going to your fellow business owners and providing assistance where they may require it, listening to your customers and finding opportunities to lend a helping hand.
The possibilities are endless and you know what? It feels good!
Do you make a real focus to give as much as you can to others? The smallest and most simple of gestures can go a long way. Let me know what you do in the comments.
